Additional Protections for Persons with a Disability
- A tenant has the right to make reasonable modifications to an apartment or common area, at their own expense.
- The tenant must prove that the request for accommodation is directly related to their disability.
- A landlord must make reasonable exceptions to building
rules, such as allowing a service dog when pets are otherwise not
permitted.
Additional Protection for Active Members of the Military
- Military status is a protected class under the New York State Human Rights Law
- All protections offered to other protected classes in New York State also apply to active members of the military.
